2025 SMU Mustangs Football Predictions
By The Don Corleone Jones (@cjoneswho1212 on twitter)
Rhett Leslie put together a great campaign in his first season in the ACC. 11-1 in the regular season and a berth to the ACC title game was a success for the Mustangs in 2024. Now teams in the ACC won’t take them lightly in 2025 so they’re going to have to compete harder than they did a year ago. Here is my prediction for the 2025 SMU Mustangs.
Offense
This offense last year looked special and it was all thanks to quarterback Kevin Jennings. This offense was a high-octane offense and with Jennings at the helm we should see a repeat of success. Also SMU went out and brought in Tyler Van Dyke from the transfer portal to compete with Jennings to keep this high-octane offense still running at a high level. Tight end RJ Maryland has potential to breakout this year and be a top tight end prospect in next year’s draft.
Defense
This defense was very strong against the run last season as they led the ACC in rushing yards per game and opponents averaged under three yards per carry on them. My only worry about this Mustangs defense is the vulnerability they have against the pass. Especially with them taking on the better QB’s that the ACC has to offer this year. This team won’t allow a ton of points in most games, but with the talent at quarterback that the top teams in the ACC has it makes it hard for me to fully trust this Mustangs defense in the big games in conference.
Schedule
Vs Baylor (Loss)
At Missouri State (Win)
At TCU (Win)
Vs Syracuse (Win)
Vs Stanford (Win)
At Clemson (Loss)
At Wake Forest (Win)
Vs Miami (Win)
At Boston College (Win)
Vs Louisville (Loss)
At California (Win)
(9-3)
The Mustang win total is set at 8.5 with the over at (-120) and the under at (-102) on FanDuel. There isn’t good value there for the Mustangs to take their win total in my honest opinion unless you’re using the over to parlay with other win totals. The only value for the Mustangs on a future is to either take them to win the ACC +850 or to be make the CFP +370 if you’re feeling confident in them. I think with the three regular season losses and losing to Louisville will keep them out of both the ACC title game and the CFP as a whole. I just think their schedule is tougher this year than it was a season ago.
