2025 Oklahoma Sooners Football Predictions
By Don Corleone Jones (@cjoneswho1212 on twitter)
After the second losing record in a three year span, Will Venables is on the hot seat. He is more so on the hot seat after putting together a productive off season. They bring in Ben Arbuckle to be the team’s new offensive coordinator and Venables is taking over the defensive signal calling. Oklahoma last season was a complete opposite of what we are used to seeing a Sooners team. Their defense was stellar and their offense was subpar. They need to get both units to be above par if they want to compete in the SEC. With that being said, here is my prediction for the 2025 Oklahoma Sooners football team.
Offense
The Sooners hit a home run with their transfer portal additions. At quarterback they bring in John Mateer who comes from Washington State with the new Oklahoma offensive coordinator. Last year, Mateer threw for 3,136 passing yards with 29 passing touchdowns and rushed for over 1000 yards with 15 rushing touchdowns as well. This is the best quarterback prospect that the Sooners have had since Caleb Williams. The good additions don’t stop there as they add Jaydn Ott (California) to their running back room. Ott and Jovantae Barnes are going to be a top running back duo in the SEC and maybe even in the country. This running back room creates opportunities for the wide receiver room to get even better. They get Deion Burks back to help a decently good receiving room to have a legitimate number one option. Oklahoma adds Jake Maikkula (Stanford) and Derek Simmons (Western Carolina) to be their starters for the 2025 season. Their offensive line was plagued by injuries a season ago. This year they will be healthy and will help Mateer and this offense strive to heights that we know they can be at.
Defense
This defensive unit is looking to build off a successful 2024 campaign. The Sooners held SEC teams to 5.2 yards a play and ranked 13 nationally in defensive success rate. On the defensive line, they are led by R Mason Thomas who had 9 sacks a season ago. They bring in former five star recruit Marvin Jones Jr from Florida State to be on the other side of him. This group has some talent and will need this group to be big time. At linebacker, they aren’t deeper but they have two good linebackers on the outside that will be essential to their success. Sammy Omosigho and Kip Lewis need to be big playmakers alone to replace what Danny Stutsman did for them. In the secondary, they have a star that is blooming before our eyes in Eli Bowen. Robert Spears-Jennings was amazing last year especially at run support. This group has a ton of guys returning and this could be the start of a good secondary that flourishes down in Norman.
Schedule
Vs Illinois State (Win)
Vs Michigan (Loss)
At Temple (Win)
Vs Auburn (Win)
Vs Kent State (Win)
At Texas (Loss)
At South Carolina (Loss)
Vs Ole Miss (Win)
At Tennessee (Loss)
At Alabama (Loss)
Vs Missouri (Win)
Vs LSU (Win)
(7-5)
Their win total is set at 6.5 with the over at (-178) and the under set at (+144). I think there’s a chance that this team could win eight to nine games. However, I think they are on the wrong side of two 50/50 games that will cost them. Oklahoma has potential, but they are going to be bowl eligible and keep Will Venables' job for another year.
